We are excited to introduce three additional appointments to the FMI board of directors and four new staff members to the staff team. This supports our strategy of continuing to build on our core base of specialised skills and expertise, reaffirming our position as market leaders in income protection.
The new members joining Brad Toerien, Peter Cordial, Simon Cordial and Lucia Kujawa to the board are: Willem Smith (Chairman), Conrad Backeberg (Non Executive Director) and Johnny Symmonds (Non Executive Director). Willem Smith, recently assisted in starting up MiWay, a short term insurance entity, as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director. Conrad Backeberg, is a recent Managing Director of RGA Reinsurance Company South Africa and brings with him 27 years of business and actuarial consulting experience from the South African financial services industry. Lastly, Johnny Symmonds is currently the Managing Director of Lombard Insurance Company South Africa. Peter Cordial, Simon Cordial and Lucia Kujawa continue to hold a vested interest in FMI not only as Non Executive Directors but also as shareholders.
Additionally, we would like to welcome four new staff members that have joined the FMI team. Tim Maxwell arrived at FMI from the transport industry, where he provided logistics solutions both as a project manager and business development manager. At FMI, Tim is responsible for strategic business development, in addition to managing key accounts and group schemes. Nic Smit is a UCT graduate in Actuarial Science, whose role currently includes group risk analysis and business development which requires interfacing with our Financial Advisors. Mick Van Lingen another UCT graduate in Actuarial Science, provides actuarial and technical assistance to various business units. Michael Shongwe has been in the insurance industry for 17 years, specialising mainly in underwriting and fraud investigation. Currently Michael assists in FMI’s claims and underwriting department.
